Championship strugglers Rotherham United are in talks with Middlesbrough's young midfielder Lewis Maloney, according to HITC Sport.

It is understood that Maloney has been granted the opportunity to train with The Millers this week in the hope of earning himself of a contract with the Championship outfit.

The midfielder has rose through the youth system at the Riverside but has failed to make a senior appearance for the club.

He appears to be a player of great promise however and has made the substitutes bench for the first team on a number of occasions.

The 21-year-old's current deal with Middlesbrough is set to expire at the end of this season and they are obviously keen to help Maloney further his footballing career elsewhere.

The Millers currently sit rock bottom of the Sky Bet Championship table in what has been a truly abysmal campaign so far for the Yorkshire club.

Having amassed a mere 13 points from 25 league games, it is evident that the Millers are in serious need of some fresh faces in this transfer window if they are to have any hope of staying in the second tier.
