Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom is the new favourite for the Nottingham Forest job.

Sky Bet have cut odds on Heckingbottom taking over at the City Ground, to 2/1, leaving him favourite over caretaker manager Gary Brazil who is 3/1.

Forest owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi is still looking for a replacement for Philippe Montanier, who was sacked following last weekends, 1-1 draw with Birmingham City.

Brazil, who was placed in temporary charge, led Forest to a 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Bristol City at the weekend to ease relegation fears.

The Reds currently sit 19th in the Sky Bet Championship, five-points outside the relegation zone.

This is stark contrast to Heckingbottom’s Barnsley side, who have surprised many and sit just outside the play-off positions.

Saturday saw the Tykes end Leeds United’s eight game unbeaten run, with a 3-2 victory. The result propelled Barnsley into eighth place in the table and just four-points adrift of sixth placed Sheffield Wednesday.

If Heckingbottom were to takeover as Forest’s new manager, he would face an uphill battle both on and off the pitch.

Captain Henri Lansbury was sold to Midland’s rivals Aston Villa last week.

There have also been distractions off the pitch, with a proposed takeover falling through, along with fans protesting against current owner Al-Hasawi.
