Bolton survived a major scare as they managed to book a place in the second round of the Capital One Cup, after needing extra-time to beat local rivals Bury.

Dougie Freedman made nine changes to the side that suffered a 3-0 opening day defeat to Watford, with Tim Ream and Darren Pratley the only two to survive. David Flitcroft made just two changes to his side that that faced Cheltenham on the opening day, with Nathan Cameron and Chris Sedgwick replacing Craig Jones and Danny Mayor.

Despite being two leagues below the Wanderers, Bury started strongly, as they took a deserved lead after 20 minutes when 35-year-old Ryan Lowe, ghosted in ahead of David Wheater and Dorian Dervite to slot the ball past Adam Bogdan.

Rob Hall arrived late to meet Liam Feeney's low cross shortly after, but failed to test the keeper as he blazed his shot over the bar. Ryan Lowe then hit the side net at the other end after breaking clear of Tim Ream.

Wheater made a superb block to prevent Tutte from adding a second on 36 minutes, before Bolton were denied an equaliser as Shwan Jalal got down at the feet of Jermaine Beckford - injuring himself in the process - to ensure Bury took their lead into the break.

The whistle for half-time sparked cheers in the away end, as 3,000 Bury fans applauded their players of the pitch. However, boos rand around the home end as they made their views clear on the first half performance.

SUBSTITUTIONS: Robert Lainton replaced Shwan Jalal (injured)

Bolton began the second half brighter than what they ended the first, as a link up between Liam Trotter and youngster Conor Wilkinson saw a shot saved low by the former Trotter Lainton.

Bury were soon back in control of the game, as Bolton-born Nicky Adams was brought down outside the area, only to see his shot saved by a strong hand of Adam Bogdan. Craig Davies and Lee-Chung-Yong were both introduced by Dougie Freedman halfway through the second half, as Bolton looked for a way back into the game.

Joe Thompson completed his comeback in the 84th minute, after being cured of cancer just eight-weeks ago, to a standing ovation by the travelling Bury faithful.

It looked as though the Shakers would hold onto the lead to give them a memorable victory, which they would have done if it wasn't for Lainton bringing down Craig Davies in the sixth minute of added time, resulting in a spot kick. Davies stepped up, and smashed the ball into the roof of the net with the visiting players fuming as they disagreed with the referees decision.

Within the first six minutes of extra-time, Bolton were 3-1 up thanks to a brace from Neil Danns, who replaced Darren Pratley late on in normal time. The first saw him bundle in a cross from Liam Feeney, but the second was a world class finish as he sent his free kick into the top corner of the net. McNulty then grabbed one back for the Shakers just 60 seconds later, after getting the final touch to prod the ball over the line.

Bury had numerous appeals of penalties turned down late on, which were all turned away by referee Simpson, before Bogdan saved Tutte's shot in the final minute to prevent Bury from grabbing a late equaliser.
