Burton Albion have announced on their official website that their new signing Luke Varney will spend at least a month on the sidelines.

The forward only joined the Brewers on Wednesday following his contract cancellation at Ipswich Town and he made his debut in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.

But the 34-year-old didn’t get the debut that he would have wished for as he had to vacate the field on a stretcher in the second half.

The Brewers have revealed that Varney has suffered a punctured lung and a broken rib which will leave him in the recovery room for at least four weeks.

The injury comes as a blow to the player who arrived at the Pirelli Stadium in the hope that he can get firing for the new Championship side.

Speaking about the injury, Nigel Clough said: “More than anything this is a blow for Luke. Unfortunately, that’s one of the things that can happen in football. We look forward to getting him back on the pitch some time in February.”

The former Leeds man has a huge amount of experience of playing in the second tier with over 300 appearances to his name and his expertise could prove crucial for the Brewers when he returns.
