Bristol City have had a bid rejected by fellow Championship side Fulham for striker Matt Smith, according to HITC.

The striker had a very fruitful spell on loan at Ashton Gate last season as the Robins clinched the League One title.

His 13 goals in 20 appearances played a significant contribution, and Bristol City are clearly desperate to bring the striker in again as they struggle to score goals at Championship level.

Although Smith has failed to claim a regular place in the first team at Craven Cottage, it still seems unlikely he will be allowed to leave at the present time by these actions.

This may be because there is continued interest in both Ross McCormack and Moussa Dembele, and with the Cottagers under a transfer embargo, they won't be able to bring any strikers in should one or both leave.

This could mean that Smith may experience more first team football over the second half of the season.

Bristol City may still come in with an improved bid in the next week however, as they seek to strengthen their squad for the relegation battle ahead.

The Robins are currently sitting in 22nd place in the Championship, and are clearly seeking reinforcements in a bid to avoid an immediate return to League One.

Fulham themselves are not completely out of relegation concern in 19th place, so will be keen to keep hold of players who could supply the goals to keep them afloat.
