Bristol City are interested in signing striker Lucas Joao from Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday, The Bristol Post have reported.

It was reported earlier this week by Sun journalist Justin Allen that Joao has handed in a transfer request at Sheffield Wednesday, and it seems that has caught the attention of Bristol City.

According to the report, The Robins are interested in bringing the Portuguese striker to Ashton Gate following the latest revelations, with manager Lee Johnson keen to add at least one more striker to his squad ahead of the start of the new season.

It may not be easy for Bristol City to complete the signing of Joao however, with a number of other Championship sides said to be holding a 'serious' interest in the 25-year-old.

Joao first joined Sheffield Wednesday from Nacional in his native Portugal in the summer of 2015, and has gone onto make 127 appearances and score 27 goals in all competitions for the Owls, while also spending half a season on loan at Blackburn Rovers during his time in England.

There are still two years remaining on Joao's contract at Hillsborough, which could put Wednesday in a strong position when negotiating any potential transfer fee for the striker.

The Verdict

This could be a good signing for Bristol City.

Joao has plenty of experience in the Championship, and coming off the back of his most productive season in the division in terms of goals, there is certainly potential within the striker to exploit.

A tall, physical presence, Joao is not dissimilar to current Robins striker Famara Diedhiou, which could suggest that he will fit in well with the Robins style of play.

There may be some concern about the potential cost of the striker, but so far that does not exactly appear to have put Bristol City off a number of other targets in the summer transfer window, with the club having already broken their transfer record on centre back Tomas Kalas.

The Robins have enjoyed an impressive close season in terms of recruitment so far, and a centre forward is one of the few areas that they have yet to strengthen in during the window, so this could round off the club's summer spending nicely.
