Chris Hughton believes the Sky Bet Championship race for promotion is not just a two horse race, reports the Chronicle Live.

Brighton boss Hughton warned his side and league leaders, Newcastle United that they faced many “twists and turns” during the Championship run-in.

Newcastle and Brighton remain favourites to take the two automatic promotion favourites, despite the Seagulls’ 2-0 defeat to Preston on Saturday.

The defeat was Brighton’s first since September and allowed Newcastle to regain top spot, after their 2-1 win over Brentford.

Hughton, who managed Newcastle to their last promotion, believes there are too many good sides in the division to rule out of automatic promotion, he believes threat will come from “the teams that are performing well like Leeds, Reading and Huddersfield.”

Leeds moved into third place on Friday night, following a 1-0 win over play-off chasing Derby County, and trail second placed Brighton by six points.

The Brighton boss also believes the strength of mid-table teams like Norwich and Aston Villa will make the promotion race extra difficult, before adding: “There are too many good teams to think it’s going to be just between two. I think there will be lots of twists and turns for the rest of the season.”
