Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton is a January loan target for ADO Den Haag, a report from the Lancashire Telegraph has claimed.

Brereton has endured a torrid time at Ewood Park since arriving from Nottingham Forest for a reported £7million in the summer of 2018.

The attacker has made a total of 34 appearances in all competitions for Tony Mowbray's side since that move, scoring just once in that time, in a 2-0 win at home to Bolton last April.

Despite those struggles, it is thought that recently appointed Den Haag boss Alan Pardew is keen to bring Brereton to the Netherlands on a temporary basis in the current window.

Blackburn themselves have been forced to scour the market for attacking options this month, following the long term injury suffered by Bradley Dack just before Christmas, and it is yet to be seen whether Mowbray will give Brereton's exit the go-ahead.

There are currently two and a half years remaining on Brereton's contract with Blackburn, securing his future at Ewood Park until the summer of 2022.

As things stand, Den Haag are second from bottom of the Dutch top flight, three points adrift of safety.

The Verdict

This could be the best move for all concerned.

Given the amount of money they spent on him, Blackburn are not going to want to throw the towel in when it comes to Brereton any time soon, but things simply aren't working out for either party with this move at the minute.

A temporary departure for Brereton to a club like Den Haag, where the focus on him will surely be reduced, could hopefully allow him to rebuild his confidence and start to find the net again before a return to Ewood Park in the summer.

If he does make this move, it will be interesting to see just what position Pardew elects to employ him in, given Mowbray's preference to generally use Brereton out wide rather than his natural centre forward position, and the impact that has on his returns and performances could well prove to be telling.
