Aston Villa are set to make a £4m bid for Barnsley’s James Bree, reports The Sun.

The 19-year old defender is highly thought of at Oakwell, making 19 appearances across all competitions this season, but it is believed Villa boss Steve Bruce is ready to make a large bid.

Bruce, travelled to Blackpool to watch Bree in the Tyke’s 0-0 draw in the Third Round of the FA Cup on Saturday, and is willing to offer big wages to the right back who has failed to agree on a new deal with Barnsley.

Despite also attracting attention from Premier League sides, Villa look set to move first for Bree as they look to make a push for the play-offs in 2017.

Barnsley look set to face a difficult month in the transfer window, with both captain Conor Hourihane and leading scorer Sam Winnall wanted men.

Villa are also set to make changes this window, they have been linked with both Robbie Brady and Henri Lansbury.

The Villains currently sit in 12th place in the Sky Bet Championship after what has been a mediocre campaign so far for the Midlands outfit.

Bruce's side face a derby match with Paul Lambert's Wolves at Molineux on Saturday in the evening kick-off, with both clubs looking to launch pushes towards the top six of the division.
