According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa are one of four clubs considering a swoop to bring former Villains star Stewart Downing back to the club in January.

This report says that Aitor Karanka is ready to let Stewart Downing leave Premier League side Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the season.

The exciting winger joined Aston Villa from hometown club Middlesbrough in 2009 and played over 50 matches there in a two year spell.

The former England international left Villa to join Liverpool and then had a successful spell at West Ham before his return to Middlesbrough in summer 2015.

This season has been a bit of a different story as the 32-year-old has managed just one start in the last two months.

Premier League side Crystal Palace are interested in Downing, with Sam Allardyce aiming for a reunion with his former West Ham star.

Championship trio Aston Villa, Derby County and Fulham are also keen on a loan move.
