Wolves have had a very disappointing season this year after nearly making the play-offs last season.

Poor recruitment and selling their best players has led to a struggle for Wolves this season, who look set for a mid table finish.

Wolves were excellent last season under Kenny Jackett in their first season back in the second tier, lighting up the Championship with excellent attacking play.

The feature of the Wolves attack at first was Bakary Sako, who was excellently linking up with Nouha Dicko as Wolves consolidated themselves in mid table.

But things really picked up when Jackett signed Benik Afobe from Arsenal, who went on to score 13 goals in 21 games.

The midfield of Kevin McDonald and Conor Coady was solid and industrious for Wolves, whilst the defence was inconsistent and ultimately cost them the play-offs.

Danny Batth and Scott Golborne were inconsistent at the back, leaking goals regularly, whilst Richard Stearman was decent, but it was right back Dominic Iorfa who proved the breakout star with his impressive pace making him a good attacking outlet.

Wolves ultimately fell just short of the top six in a very close promotion battle, losing out on the final day. Wolves fans expected the club to build on this success in the summer and add more players to the squad, but instead the opposite occurred.

Star striker Afobe stayed for half the season, scoring nine times before moving to Premier League side AFC Bournemouth. Also, star winger Sako didn't sign a new contract and left for Premier League Crystal Palace, whilst Dicko suffered a bad injury keeping him out for the season.

In defence, they lost Stearman to Fulham and lost Golborne to Bristol City.

A poor recruitment policy failed to replace these key players, with Adam le Fondre and Joe Mason failing to fill the void left by Sako, Afobe and Dicko. Jed Wallace has struggled to establish himself, and the defence has been poor all season, with Mike Williamson being drafted in on loan to help sort it out.

The loan signing of George Savile has been successful though, and his form has helped relieve the pressure on Jackett and lead Wolves to a comfortable mid table finish.

Their top scorer is Dave Edwards, so Jackett will need to sign an out-and-out striker for next season if they are to challenge for promotion, and also get rid of some deadwood.

The Dutch winger promised a lot when he arrived from Heerenveen, possessing a lot of pace and technical ability.

Last season he put in some good displays but was very inconsistent, with Sako being the much preferred option on the wing.

Van La Parra didn't make the squad on occasion last season with his inconsistency frustrating fans and, after failing to make the team this season, he joined Brighton on loan, scoring two goals in six games. Yet, once again his inconsistency caused him to be omitted from the squad.

He is currently on loan to Huddersfield Town with eyes to a permanent deal but, with only two appearances all season, this already seems unlikely.

The former Peterborough United midfielder is very experienced for a 26-year-old and joined Wolves in 2014 but, in two seasons, he has only played 17 games and has spent a lot of his time on loan in League One to Scunthorpe United and Doncaster Rovers, where his game time has also been limited.

He seems well placed in League One and won't get ahead of McDonald in the pecking order, so moving him along may be a good idea.

He was good for Peterborough in League One, so a side of similar stature may suffice.

Bjorn Sigurdarson

The Icelandic striker has struggled to establish himself since arriving at Molineux, with seven goals in 57 appearances illustrative of his struggle to adapt from Norwegian football to English football.

After spending a couple of seasons in Denmark on loan, he has not been able to show any kind of form for Wolves this season and, with the departure of Afobe and the injury to Dicko, it was important for Sigurdarson to find some form.

But only two appearances this season shows his struggles, and he needs a move back to his native Scandinavia to find his feet again.

The African winger has been on the books at Wolves since 2012 after impressing at Lens and Rennes.

But Boukari has made just four appearances since moving to Wolves, and has spent a lot of time on loan in his native France to get game time.

He is currently playing in the Under-21s and development squads, with him being not good enough to get any game time.

The winger should have been sold a while back, but Jackett should act now to free up some funds.

Ethan Ebanks-Landell

Wolves have major problems in defence, making the decision to sell Golborne and Stearman even more baffling.

A failure to replace them meant they conceded a number of goals at the start of the season, meaning Williamson was brought in from Newcastle United on loan, but he was disappointing too.

Captain Batth has failed to show leadership, but also young centre back Ethan Ebanks-Landell looks exposed at this level, and in the defensive rebuild he should be moved on.
