Sheffield Wednesday could well find themselves in the Premier League next season after emerging as a hugely talented side under the stewardship of Carlos Carvalhal.

The Portuguese coach has put together a wonderful attacking outfit who, though reasonably inconsistent, certainly boast the quality needed to come out victorious in the playoffs, should they get there of course.

Perhaps one of the major highlights of this season was their League Cup run. They had a wonderful victory over an Arsenal side in good form at the time, as well as a well earned win away at Newcastle.

It was on that fateful September evening that the Owls demonstrated the kind of traits that have been so severely lacking within the ranks of the Toon Army prior to Rafa's recent resurgence.

Not only that, but it may have shown the Magpies some potential talent as they plot what is likely to a major summer reboot.

Tom Lees

Tom Lees have previously been linked with Newcastle, such is the nature of his impressive performances this season.

The 25-year old has been a rock in the rearguard at Hillsborough, emerging as one of the most solid defenders in the Championship. Able to perform either centrally or at full-back, the former Leeds man would be perfect for Newcastle.

Only recently has Jamal Lascelles stepped up to the plate, while Steven Taylor is widely expected to leave the club no matter what.

Lees would be an astute addition.

Sam Hutchinson

Jonjo Shelvey was brought over to Tyneside in a blockbuster deal over the course of the January transfer window, though has so far failed to wholly convince in black and white.

What the club are lacking is a combative and robust central midfielder to doggedly reclaim possession and lead the team forward as a result.

Sam Hutchinson would be a wonderful addition in that respect, able to bring out the best in perhaps the more glamorous names he'd be paired with.

Kieran Westwood

Rob Elliot covered himself in glory following Tim Krul's injury, prior to his own unfortunate ailment. The Republic of Ireland 'keeper was in stunning form leading up to his injury and has surely replaced the Dutchman between the sticks.

Karl Darlow has done little wrong since his introduction, though Krul will surely depart over the course of the summer.

Considering that, perhaps moving for Westwood to provide cover and competition would be a sensible avenue to go down.

Lucas Joao

Despite their awful league position, Newcastle is a team packed to the rafters with attacking talent.

However, they've lacked dynamism at times when star man Georginio Wijnaldum has dipped in form. Which, sadly has been pretty frequent recently.

Portuguese forward Lucas Joao is by no means the finished article, but possesses the creative spark necessary to endear himself to the Toon Army faithful.

A prodigious talent, the 22-year old would have no doubt benefitted from his year in England and will only get better.

Jack Hunt

Barely the most exciting of names in world football, though Owls defender Jack Hunt could represent a solid signing for the Tyneside titans.

With Daryl Janmaat expected to leave no matter the outcome of their bid to beat the drop this season, the club could do a lot worse than making a move for the solid 25-year old defender.
