If Portsmouth are successful this campaign and surpass League One status, then the additions are key to the ex-Premier League side's success.

Any side who show any promise in the top six usually have a 20-goal-a-season striker, a Jordan Rhodes for example would be ideal for Pompey, FLW's Conor McGilligan will highlight a set of League One strikers that would be realistic for the Pompey boss to target.

The south coast club face a tricky play-off semi-final against Plymouth Argyle in their pursuit of promotion to the third tier of English football.

A victory over Plymouth in both legs of the semi-final will give Paul Cook's men a match against either Accrington Stanley or AFC Wimbledon in the showpiece final at Wembley.

FLW writer Conor McGilligan has identified FIVE League One strikers Pompey should sign in the summer......

Nicky Ajose

Nicky Ajose

The Swindon man has easily one of the best players in League One this season, his prolific nature has pushed Swindon on another gear in the striker department, but unfortunately for Swindon, this hasn't led to a positive season with the southern club languishing in 16th.

22 goals and a host of assists Ajose has revitalised his career and has become the number one hitman for Swindon as he stakes his worth for the higher divisions.

After a mishap with Leeds amongst other clubs Ajose has now solidified himself as someone who a club should take a punt on.

Pompey have had a successful campaign and with the addition of someone like Ajose, Pompey could be firing in all cylinders.

Leon Clarke

leon clarke

A now proven man in League One, Leon Clarke has already announced and expressed his need to play in at a higher level next season, Bury have had a very poor season and are now in 15th place with no real ambition or funding going into next season.

Pompey however are a team on the up, a brilliant history, fanbase and success rate Clarke could be persuaded if Pompey get promotion to make the transfer down south.

Clarke has been a key part of Bury's season with 15 goals and 3 assists.

Not only this but possibly most impressively, Clarke has been involved in 29 chances created this season, not only the goal converter, but the goalscorer.

Lee Novak

novak

Novak has been around the block at the top level of the football league and has emphasised that he is open to change over the past month.

Novak is a true veteran and has once again established himself as he has by himself driven Chesterfield to possibly stay in the division.

His work ethic, ability aerially and experience especially could make him ideal for a Portsmouth side that in some areas lack that key experience at a higher level.

Chesterfield's poor season was saved by Novak who grabbed himself 14 goals and 3 assists, if Portsmouth can come into League One next season there is no doubt that the ex Huddersfield man will have his head turned by Portsmouth if they lay out their ambition to reach the top level once again.

Ian Henderson

mitreeeeeeee

Henderson has been around the game for a while now, and his 13 goals and 3 assists have given Rochdale that 11th finish in the league, which is promising after they went off the rails earlier on this year, summed up by a Barnsley thrashing.

Henderson is a veteran in the box, a typical poacher and someone that any team needs in the upper levels of English football.

His physicality and aerial threat pose him as a problem for most outfits in League One.

His ability to win a ball and flick it on makes him perfect for the physical battles and essential if he has a quick, pacey player feeding off him.

At League One level he is essential and a real asset, and if Pompey can get that lucrative promotion deal, maybe they could turn his head.

Billy Sharp

sharp00

Sharp brings experience and goals. His ability to win the ball in the air and to fire The Blades into leads has brought his tally to 21 goals this season with 9 assists, something not to overlook.

Pompey's squad at the minute lacks any real experience, Sharp would bring this with his array of Championship clubs and goals behind him.

Sharp is a leader and knows what it takes to be successful in The Championship and League One, Sharp could be comparable to someone of Kevin Phillips status in his later years, Sharp is always looking for a new challenge and with United not really maintaining any push over the past few years, a fresh new Portsmouth squad could be perfect for Sharpe.
