Sheffield Wednesday have had a superb season which sees them in the play-off final four.

Their acquisitions have been shrewd and effective, a certain system has been used to make sure the deals put in place were relatively cheap.

Using a specific system, Wednesday have managed to avoid many of the pitfalls of previous Championship clubs when they commit to big spending.

Teams like Cardiff, Nottingham Forest and Fulham have all spent big money in recent seasons. None are in the Premier League.

They are proving to the league that it is possible to spend sensibly, a tactic that has eluded many English clubs. Now, Carvalhal just has to lead them through the play-offs, a task that would not have been dreamed of this time last year.

Joey O'Brien

The veteran of the Premier League knows what it takes to succeed there.

If Wednesday do emulate this and get into the Premier League the Irishman could give them solidarity and experience - in a vital position at the back.

Even if Wednesday don't make the cut, they have managed to attract Premier League players in Hooper and Bannan to Hillsborough, so this may not be that unexpected.

O’Brien’s contract with the London club expires this summer and it is looking extremely likely that the veteran will leave East London.

Wednesday if promoted will be embroiled in a battle to stay in the Premier League, with the outcome to have a major impact on the South Yorkshire clubs budget.

O'Brien has played in a number of roles during the course of his career but has primarily been used as a right-back in recent years, and that is an area of the squad the Wednesday boss would like to add strength too

Alex Tettey

Tettey at rennes

Tettey enjoyed an impressive first season in the Premier League with Norwich, chalking up 27 appearances after scoring on his debut against Doncaster in the Carling Cup.

The industrious midfielder instantly proved a big hit with supporters, and provided a crucial assist in the 1-0 home win over Arsenal when his fierce shot produced a goalkeeping fumble for Grant Holt's winner.

An ankle injury meant he missed three months in the middle of the 2013-14 campaign, but he still managed to make 22 appearances and scored one of the finest goals seen at Carrow Road in recent years, with a 25-yard volley in the 2-0 win against Sunderland in March.

The Norwegian international formed a pivotal part of the City squad which secured promotion back to the Premier League in 2014-15, featuring in 39 games and scoring twice.

A key part in Norwich's promotion Tettey provided serious stability, physicality and muscle in the midfield. But not only that, he provided some serious quality in that game adding goals and assists to his game.

Tettey a quality player would be a seriously good addition to a Wednesday team.

Steven Whittaker

Steven Whittake90

Integral to a Norwich promotion earlier on in his career, Whittaker has this in his locker.

Experienced Scottish international right-back who would be an excellent addition at Championship level.

The 31-year-old began the season in the Norwich team but after a red card at Southampton has struggled for game time, and since October he hasn’t featured.

Whittaker would add strength and depth to a Wednesday squad at any level, he has Premier League and Championship experience, so this addition would be a very shrewd addition.

Nick Powell

Nick PowellNick Powell

The England under-21 international may be looking for a new home this summer with his Manchester United deal at an end.

Currently on loan at Hull, the attacking midfielder’s career has stalled in the past couple of seasons after a productive loan spell at Wigan in 2013/14.

He’s suffered with injuries, but given a run he would thrive in the Championship. Hull will be first in the queue with Steve Bruce recently revealing he’d like to sign Powell, but if not then the 22-year-old would fit the Wolves mould.

But with money now being a huge push for players, Powell could join an ambitious midfield and squad and link up terrifically well with a superb Barry Bannan this season, at any level.

Gary O'Neil

o'neil3

O’Neil is out of contract come the summer.

With experience at all levels, and very good ones at that, he has played at the top level and is technically brilliant.

His last few games have shown his leadership and his quality, he has by far been Norwich's best player and with The Championship looming they won't want rid of the veteran.

However, Wednesday's money and their ability to lure players (especially if they reach the Premier League) could be a big turn for O'Neil.
