Manchester United are rebuilding after a difficult few seasons since the departure of legendary manager Alex Ferguson.

Under Louis van Gaal they have spent big over the summer in an attempt to compete for the title, and they currently sit in third position.

United spent big over the summer in an attempt to compete for the title, and they brought in midfielders Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

They also took a huge gamble spending a hefty sum of money on young French striker Anthony Martial, but it has payed off so far with his explosive start to the Premier League season.

But they have become overly reliant on the Frenchman up front, with Rooney completely out of form and James Wilson not good enough to fill in the void.

When Martial inevitably hits a purple patch, they will need a top striker to step up from them, and even though in the winter they will look abroad for this top striker, there are some good options in the Championship.

United also have the best defence in the Premier League so a potent attack in front of it will make them genuine contenders for the Premier League.

Here are FIVE potential strikers Manchester United could sign from the Championship in January......

Moussa Dembele

The young Frenchman has been in great form for Fulham this season, and has scored seven goals in 14 appearances so far.

He has scored more this season than in his entire career and is just 19-years-old, he has also been capped by France at every youth level.

Dembele is quick and an excellent finisher and could join up with Martial as another promising young French striker.

He has been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks, and is attracting glances from all the top leagues in Europe as he continues to impress for Fulham.

Charlie Austin

The QPR frontman scored 18 Premier League goals last season for a poor QPR team, and after he failed to keep them up he was heavily linked with a move away from Loftus Road.

He has been plagued with injuries this season but has already scored a number of goals for QPR in the Championship, and clearly should be playing at a higher level.

With the top clubs in Europe unlikely to sell there best players in the middle of the season, Austin may be the most amicable option United have.

Andre Gray

The Burnley frontman will no doubt be linked with Premier League moves in January, given his impressive goalscoring start to his Burnley career.

After doing excellently for Brentford last season, he has continued this good form for Burnley this season and is a player of Premier League pedigree.

He will cost a sizeable amount as he has only been at Burnley for half a season, but he knows exactly where the back of the net is - something Manchester Unite desperately need.

Lucas Joao

The young Portuguese striker has made quite the impression since he started at Sheffield Wednesday, and his goalscoring form has been crucial to there rise up the table.

He is young and has been capped for Portugal at numerous youth levels, and scored an impressive goal against Arsenal earlier in the season.

United have a good history with buying young Portuguese prospects as well, and Joao is certainly raising interested eyebrows at Hillsborough.

Jordan Rhodes

United could take a gamble on an established Championship goalscorer like Rhodes.

He has scored 20 goals a season since he moved there from Huddersfield and has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, but no one has taken a chance on him.

The Scotland international is a renowned finisher and poacher and exactly what United may need.
