It's been a less than convincing start for early promotion favourites Portsmouth, who have seen inconsistent form see them take five points from their opening four games in League Two.

Pompey have been on the verge of getting out of English football's fourth tier for a few seasons now, but fell short last year in the play-offs, where they lost out over two legs to Plymouth Argyle.

Portsmouth failed in the summer to capture Marc McNulty and Caolan Lavery, two players who they had success with last season in different loan spells.

The club will no doubt be looking to add to their squad before the end of the transfer window, with manager Paul Cook determined this season to get his side back into League One.

Here, FLW writer Lee Connor takes a look at FOUR players Pompey should try and sign before the end of the transfer window...

Jordan Lyden

The Aston Villa squad is growing, as Roberto Di Matteo looks to add quality to his ranks to build on what has been a positive last 10 days for the club.

In Jordan Lyden, Portsmouth would be getting a young player with a point to prove, and one who is unlikely to find himself in the Villa team much this season.

Lyden would provide a bit of competition and drive from the midfield, as well as adding versatility to a squad which would welcome quality from teams like Aston Villa.

Marc McNulty

The Sheffield United striker spent time on loan with the club last term, impressing in his performances and goal return.

He is back with the Blades, but despite making the bench in each game this term, has failed to make any impact.

McNulty seemed to fit in more with Pompey than he does in Sheffield, and a move might be wise for all parties in this case.

Doneil Henry

The big defender is well out of favour with West Ham United, having spent some time on loan with Blackburn Rovers last season.

Henry needs to now be playing games, and at 23, time is running out for him to really start making a mark in his football career.

If Portsmouth could secure a move for the Canadian, he would add some much needed presence and solidarity to the back line, something which any club vying for promotion from League Two would benefit from.

Caolan Lavery

Another who has spent time already at Fratton Park, Lavery is known to be open to a move away from Sheffield Wednesday since dropping well down the pecking order following Carlos Carvalhal taking over the managerial hotseat last season.

Lavery possesses pace and excellent movement across the front line, and is someone who Pompey fans would more than welcome back with open arms.

With Lavery seemingly on his way out this transfer window, it would be an excellent addition if Portsmouth could secure a deal for the Owls striker.
