Blackburn's timely win at Newcastle United may have stopped the rot for the time being but it's clear the Lancashire giants are in real trouble of dropping to the third-tier of English football.

If they are to avoid that, January needs to be a busy month.

Since losing Jordan Rhodes, Blackburn have lacked a top-class striker that can be reliable in front of goal and it's an area where the squad greatly needs to improve in the New Year.

The problem is top-class strikers are at a premium in the Championship and, battling at the bottom, Blackburn won't be everyone's kettle of fish.

The club still have a lot to offer though and there's plenty of options out there, whether it be bringing a young talent in on-loan or giving a fresh chance to a player who's fallen down the pecking order at his current club.

Here, we've identified FOUR strikers that would be perfect for Blackburn in the January window....

Dominic Solanke

Solanke

The 19-year-old Chelsea starlet is a very versatile player, capable of playing at the head of attack, out wide or as an attacking midfielder, and is extremely highly-rated at Stamford Bridge.

Unfortunately, he's yet to make his breakthrough into the first-team despite a prolific scoring rate with the youth.

Previously spending time on-loan Vitesse, Solanke needs experience of playing regularly in English football to help his development and Blackburn would be able to hand him that chance, as they need a player of his capability to fire them into a position of safety.

Chuba Akpom

Another overlooked Premier League youngster, Chuba Akpom's chances of a breakthrough with Arsenal were halted this season through injury.

Come January, where the likes of Danny Welbeck and Lucas Perez will have recovered, Akpom has little chance of any playing opportunities.

Another loan move for the youngster is the best course of action and it may end up playing into Blackburn's hands in the long run, as Akpom turns 22 next season and will be wanting regular football.

If he doesn't get that at Arsenal, a transfer could follow.

Kyle Lafferty

Now 29, the Northern Irishman needs regular football to assure his international career.

Unfortunately, that's not forthcoming at Norwich and a transfer is likely.

Whilst promotion-chasing sides will be keen, the Canaries would probably prefer not to sell to a rival.

Lafferty could thrive at Blackburn when given the role of leading man and a player of his experience would be vital to the club.

The well-travelled forward has never quite found his place but his home could certainly be in Lancashire.

Giles Barnes

Giles Barnes

The Jamaican striker isn't well known on these shores, having left England four years ago, but he's gone fro strength-to-strength in the MLS. First shining with Houston Dynamos, Barnes is now making an impression with Vancouver.

At 28-years-old, the Barking born striker has one last chance to make an impression in Europe and, with the MLS season over, a transfer in January could be the perfect timing.

He wouldn't cost a lot and the race for his signature would be far less fierce, which may play into Blackburn's hands.
