After last season ended in heartbreak, Plymouth Argyle will start their sixth consecutive campaign in the fourth tier.

Their sole ambition is automatic promotion after missing out narrowly in the last two seasons, and after an injury crisis last season they look like they're on the right track to fixing that.

Yann Songo'o, Ryan Donaldson and Connor Smith were announced as new signings earlier in June, before Gary Miller made the switch south from Partick Thistle on Thursday. However, they still have work to do as they look to replace Peter Hartley and Gregg Wylde, who have both left Home Park after being first team regulars in the last campaign.

Argyle open the season at home to Luton Town, with both teams being tipped as potential title challengers. Three points for Derek Adams's men will be a massive boost ahead of trips to Carlisle, Blackpool and Notts County before the month is out.

The experience of coming so close could work in their favour, although it could be a very different team for Argyle next term.

So here, in the opinion of FLW's Ryan Evans, is how Plymouth could line-up ahead of their League Two campaign:

GK: Luke McCormick

After playing in almost every single Argyle game since 2013, McCormick is one of the best 'keepers in the lower leagues, and proved it on numerous occasions last season, as a part of one of the most lean defences in the country.

His shot stopping and anticipation means that the team have a very solid base to build on, and can rely on him to keep them in the game if they are caught up field.

He has made in excess of 240 appearances for the club during his two spells, and is currently club captain.

RB: Gary Miller

mitreeeeeeee

Personally, I can't decide between the ex-Partick Thistle man and Kelvin Mellor.

The latter has had a lot of criticism hurled in his direction following a sub-standard season, in which he had the tendency to give away a penalty and got his positioning really wrong. It could well boil down to confidence, or perhaps that he was guaranteed a first team spot since the departure of Durrell Berry.

The addition of Miller will give him a challenge, should Mellor sign his contract extension, and after 21 appearances in the Scottish Premier League last season, Miller is a more than capable player at this level.

At 29-years-old, he is in his prime and, after winning the Scottish first division title with Ross County when Adams was manager there, he has plenty of experience.

CB: Curtis Nelson

Curtis Nelson

What a dream it would be should Nelson be in the back four on the 6th of August. The very highly rated centre-back is out of contract this summer, and at the moment there has been no news regarding the location of the pen in relation to the paper.

He played in every minute of last season's play-offs, leading his side out at Wembley. His positional play is amongst the best in the division, and he leads by example, scoring some crucial goals during the Pilgrims' season.

Barnsley, Bolton and Rangers are in the hunt for his signature, with the premier having two bids rejected for the 23-year old.

CB: Karleigh Osborne

karleigh-osborne

The second new signing in this XI is Karleigh Osborne. Signing from Bristol City, he spent most of last season on loan at AFC Wimbledon, before a horrible injury ended it prematurely, and he missed the play-off final win against this very side.

The 28-year old is actually a League Two title winner, with Brentford in 2009, and even captained the Bees on a number of occasions. He's previously had spells at Millwall and the Robins, playing the majority of his football in the third tier.

A very physical player, he looks a perfect replacement for Bristol Rovers-bound Peter Hartley, all that's left is to sign up Nelson or find a partner for the Southall-born man. Oh, and he needs to get fit following his injury last season. But he'll probably be ready for the opening day.

LB: Gary Sawyer

Gary Sawyerbbv

Arguably one of Plymouth's best players from the season gone-by, Sawyer looked solid defensively and promising going forward, linking up with Gregg Wylde well.

The left-back had a spell at Home Park between 2002-2010, making 95 appearances. He left for Rovers, before making his way to Leyton Orient as they were relegated into League Two, before returning home to Argyle.

From the North-Devon town of Bideford, he made 46 appearances last season, and could excel once more in the upcoming season.

RDM: Carl McHugh

Carl McHugh

The Pilgrims' player of the season from the latest campaign, everything McHugh seemed to do last season came off, and that can mainly be as a result of Derek Adams.

He was utilised as a centre-back during his first season under John Sheridan, being swapped in and out of the starting XI with Hartley. However, Derek Adams immediately moved him into a holding midfield role, and he immediately warmed to this role.

He is yet to decide whether to accept the new contract offer that is on the table, although it is widely expected that he will sign again for the 2016-17 campaign.

The 23-year old is able to play as a centre-back, and that could be useful for Adams. If Nelson leaves, and they don't sign another central defender, they will be left with only Osborne, Yann Songo'o and McHugh as cover in that position. It's yet to be known how Osborne will react to his injury problems, and with Songo'o's quality debatable, McHugh could be asked to drop back into central defence.

LDM: Connor Smith

Connor Smith

Smith describes himself as a box-to-box midfielder, and is also able to play out on the right hand side, which means he is a great signing for the club.

His versatility allows him to fill in in case of another injury crisis, but he is also a player that Adams has rightly identified that they need.

Alongside McHugh, who anchors the midfield and sweeps up play, they need a more dynamic player who can go forward and create chances. Last season, that role fell to loanees Oscar Threlkeld and Hiram Boateng, but neither are likely to be back at Home Park next season.

Smith could make this position his own, and his experience of gaining promotion with Wimbledon last year could be a great asset to the Argyle dressing room.

RM: Jake Jervis

Jake Jervis

At 24-years old, Jervis has been signed on to 12 different clubs, including Argyle's rivals Portsmouth, in three different countries. And for that experience, he is a better player.

His power and pace has made him a formidable opponent for the best full-backs in the league, and ended up joint top scorer with Jake Jervis.

He started the season in the form of his life, with six goals in his first nine, and his brace away at Leyton Orient coming off the bench showed real quality, something that the Pilgrims will hope can guide them to the League Two title next term.

CAM: Graham Carey

Graham Carey

Probably the first name on the team sheet. Carey was voted League Two player of the season, scoring 11 and setting up 11 - meaning he was involved in more goals than almost any other player in that division.

He has an amazing vision, his set-pieces are amongst the best in the league, and at times you wonder whether you're watching Graham Carey or the very greats of world football at the moment.

He played enough games in the last campaign to activate a contract extension, and with all the uncertainty around some of Argyle's key players right now, it's a good job they have someone like Carey confirmed for next term.

LM: Ryan Donaldson

ryan donaldsons

After impressing in the FA Cup tie with Manchester United a few years ago, Ryan Donaldson has since had a reasonably impressive time at Cambridge, although he was released this summer and was immediately snapped up by Adams, his first signing of the summer.

With the disappointing news that Gregg Wylde moved on to Millwall, there aren't too many who would be higher up on the replacement list than Donaldson, who, after being rejected at Newcastle as a youngster, made his way back to professional football, via Gateshead and then the U's.

He made 30 appearances, 12 as a substitute, during an injury-hit campaign, but will be raring to go for his new club come August.

ST: Jordan Bowery

Bowery

The former Villa player was released by newly-promoted Oxford, and his goalscoring record is impressive. Seven in 17 for the U's last season and he was once a very highly rated young man. He made 19 appearances for the Villains, after doing well at Chesterfield.

Argyle will do well to sign Bowery, as it looks like he'll be remaining in League Two for the next campaign. But looking elsewhere in the squad, one striker signed this summer may not be enough.

New signing Jordan Slew has an abysmal goal scoring record, Reuben Reid looks like he could be on the way out of Home Park, Ryan Brunt will be back any time between September and December, which leaves Louis Rooney and Tyler Harvey, both very young players with only one appearance each last season, the final game of the season against Hartlepool, where they scored two apiece.
