Reading FC recently announced that they had completed the signing of defender Michael Morrison on a two-year-deal.

The central defender was a free agent since he opted to leave Birmingham City after his contract expired earlier in the summer.

He'll be hoping to play his part for Jose Gomes' squad next season, as they look to stay clear of the relegation zone, after narrowly avoiding dropping into League One earlier this year.

In our latest FLW Spotlight, we look into Morrison's statistics from last season in more detail.

Morrison made 43 league starts in total for Birmingham last season, and was one of the first names on the team-sheet whilst working under Garry Monk.

The experienced defender attempted 1022 passes in total for the Blues in the Championship, and with a pass accuracy of 76.8%, it makes for good reading.

Reading boss Jose Gomes has introduced a possession-based style of play into his side, and based off the statistics from last year's campaign, Morrison looks as though he could suit that style of football.

The 31-year-old is known for his tough-tackling, and with 218 interceptions in total from last season, he'll be hoping for similar performances for the Royals in the near future.

Morrison won 384 aerial duels for Birmingham in last year's campaign, and was a key member of the team that kept 11 clean sheets in total.

Reading have lacked a defender that has posed a considerable threat from set-pieces since Jake Cooper left to join Millwall in 2017.

But it seems as though Morrison could be the answer to that problem, as he scored six league goals last season, and he'll be keen to make a notable contribution at both ends of the pitch for Reading next term.

It had previously been reported by The Sun, that the Royals were under a 'soft transfer ban', but Jose Gomes recently revealed to BBC Berkshire that the transfer embargo had been lifted.

The Madejski Stadium faithful will be hoping that Gomes can make new additions to his team, so that they can add some much-needed depth to their squad.

Reading finished 20th in the Championship last season, but supporters will be expecting to see their side build on some impressive showings towards the end of the 2018/2019 campaign.

Morrison will be keen to hit the ground running, and it seems likely that he'll partner Liam Moore in the centre of defence for their opening game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday.
