Charlton have got off to an impressive start in the Championship following promotion last season, and remain unbeaten after a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest last night.

The summer was quite a turbulent one with several key players leaving and doubt over whether Lee Bowyer would continue as manager of the club.

Despite a slow start in the transfer market, Bowyer and Head of Recruitment and Steve Gallen have been able to make 13 new signings, and from their four matches The Addicks have picked up eight points, and lie in fifth place in the division.

Lyle Taylor has continued to impress and they have proved tough to beat like last season, but here are three new things we learned from the match against Forest.

Conor Gallagher and Tom Lockyer could have very big seasons

Lee Bowyer has had to add several new players to his squad but they haven't taken too long to gel, and there have already been several stand-out performances.

Gallagher has already scored two goals this season, helping his team pick up points against Stoke and at Barnsley, and against Nottingham Forest he continued to show his intelligence and took up goalscoring positions - and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet in the first half.

If he continues his current form he will certainly attract attention and coming from Chelsea, where he is already highly thought of, he will hope to impress Frank Lampard.

Tom Lockyer has also adjusted well to the step-up in divisions and made a superb recovering tackle against Lewis Grabban last night, helping his side to maintain their lead. It is important Bowyer brought in a consistent, dependable defender following Patrick Bauer's exit, and he seems to have found his man.

West Brom loanee Jonathan Leko also deserves an honourable mention. He linked up well with Taylor quite a few times and provided a brilliant cross for his goal, although he failed to produce when Taylor returned the favour in the second half with a glaring miss that could have wrapped up all three points.

The Valley could be a fortress this season

There is a feel-good factor back at the club following promotion and a belief in the job Lee Bowyer is doing, and that has helped to translate into results on the pitch.

Many thought Charlton would struggle this season and their quick start is certainly surprising given the turnover in playing personnel over the summer, and it is credit to Bowyer that he has got his team playing good football and winning games.

Forest would have arrived in South London full of confidence after demolishing Birmingham at the weekend, but their threat was nullified by the Addicks and their only goal came from a corner.

Charlton remain unbeaten at home and if the crowd can continue to get behind them they will be confident of maintaining that record for some time longer, and so far have looked comfortable in the Championship.

They have a flexible squad

Lee Bowyer mixed up his starting formation for the first time last night, operating a diamond which saw Taylor joined by a strike partner for a change, with Leko starting alongside him.

Surprisingly, there was no place for Jonny Williams, who had got off to a good start to the season. Instead, recent newcomer Erhun Oztumer started in the no.10 role and did well, highlighting the strength in depth now available to Bowyer.

The Addicks boss has so far kept things tight and organised in midfield, and despite playing more expansively against Forest they limited the away side to only three shots on target.

Charlton will now be able to mix up their style and formation depending on who they play, with the likes of Leko able to play in a number of positions, which means he can also be used in a more defensive manner than Taylor is.
