Sheffield Wednesday suffered more late heartbreak when they faced Swansea at Hillsborough, with a late Swans equaliser meaning the spoils were shared.

Garry Monk’s side came into the fixture hoping to steal a march on their opponents where a win for the Owls would see them move to within one point of their opponents. They were on the verge of doing so until a last-gasp equaliser from Ben Wilmot meant Steve Cooper’s side earned an unlikely late point in South Yorkshire.

This result came as the second game in a row where they have squandered victory late on and are now left with one point out of six instead of a full six. The Owls now go into the international break looking to force their way back into the play-off places and their next fixture doesn’t make things easier as they make the trip to the Hawthorns to face table-topping West Brom.

Following this disappointing 2-2 draw, we take a look at three things we clearly learnt from the Owls…

Concentration levels appear to be an issue

This isn’t the first time that Wednesday have dropped points due to not closing games out late on. This draw means that Garry Monk’s side have dropped seven points this season from winning positions late into games.

Before this weekend’s result, the Owls had lost to Blackburn having taken the lead in the 83rd minute and drew away to Cardiff following conceding an 87th-minute equaliser.

Had Wednesday held on to win all of these games, they would be on 32 points, which would see them in second place and just a point below the leaders, West Brom. If Wednesday are to mount a serious promotion push this season, they need to improve at closing out results like these ones.

They can mix it with those above them

Having already drawn with Leeds a fortnight ago, this result was further proof that Garry Monk’s team are more than capable of competing with the best teams the league has to offer.

If not for Wilmot’s dramatic equaliser, Wednesday would have walked away with all three points against a Swansea side that look like they will be in the top-six picture, come May.

Up next is West Brom for Wednesday, and if they can shore up those lingering issues late on, there is no reason why they can’t look for a positive result at the Hawthorns.

Individual errors proved costly

Morgan Fox’s recent performances have done a lot to shake the recent criticism he has been receiving whilst at Sheffield Wednesday.

Before this game, Fox had been putting in a string of very solid defensive performances, which saw him scoop up the club’s Player of the Month award for October. The full-back struck in injury time for the Owls to make it 2-1 to the hosts as what was surely going to be the winner but will be bitterly disappointed that it was only worth a point in the end.

However, for both of Swansea’s goals, Fox and the goalkeeper Keiren Westwood will know they should have done better. The first goal came from when Westwood failed to claim a cross followed by Fox’s inability to clear the ball, leading to Andre Ayew’s tap-in.

The second goal saw them to blame too as a deep cross hung in the air where Westwood misjudged and got caught under it before Fox lost his marker to let Wilmot in to score.
