Birmingham City extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 games on Saturday in their clash with Brentford at St Andrew's.

Having entered the game brimming with confidence following recent victories over Bristol City and Barnsley, the Blues initially made a positive start to proceedings as Jude Bellingham hit the post.

Lukas Jutkiewicz then gave the hosts the lead as he fired home his 11th goal of the season after being teed up by Gary Gardner.

Undeterred by this setback, Brentford equalised four minutes later via a header from Ethan Pinnock.

Following the break, Birmingham goalkeeper Lee Camp was forced to make an impressive save to deny Emiliano Marcondes.

Whilst the Blues believed that they should have been awarded a penalty in the closing stages of the game, referee Steve Martin waved away the appeals as the fixture ended in a draw.

Despite failing to secure victory in front of their own supporters, Birmingham managed to close the gap between them and the play-off places to nine points due to the outcome of results elsewhere.

With the dust having now settled from this particular fixture, here are three things we clearly learnt about the Blues after their 1-1 draw with Brentford...

Gardner is more than capable of filling the void left by Josh McEachran

Set to be without Josh McEachran for the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign due to the midfielder's knee injury, Birmingham needed someone to step up to the mark in his absence.

With David Davis currently out on loan at Charlton Athletic, Blues head coach Pep Clotet has turned to Gardner for inspiration in the club's recent clashes.

Following an impressive display against Barnsley, the midfielder provided an assist in Saturday's draw with Brentford in what was arguably one of his best displays of the season.

If he can continue to deliver the goods on a consistent basis over the coming months, Gardner could lead his side to a relative amount of success in the second-tier.

Camp is becoming a key player for the Blues following his early season slump

When Camp was dropped by Clotet following a string of underwhelming performances in the Championship, the shot-stopper would have been concerned about his future at Birmingham due to the fact that his contract at St Andrew's expires this summer.

However, since returning to Birmingham's starting eleven in January, the 35-year-old has produced a string of superb displays for the club.

After making two impressive saves in the first-half of Saturday's showdown, Camp denied Marcondes with a fantastic stop in the closing stages which allowed the Blues to main their current unbeaten record.

If he can continue to impress in the Championship, the keeper could potentially earn a new short-term deal.

Scott Hogan's injury could dent their slim chances of reaching the play-offs

A revelation since his loan switch from Aston Villa last month, Scott Hogan has set the Championship alight in recent weeks for Birmingham.

Having already netted three goals in four games, the forward would have been hoping to guide his side to a late push for the play-offs.

However, Hogan could now be forced to watch on from the sidelines after Clotet confirmed that he suffered an ankle injury.

Whilst the forward's issue isn't thought to be too serious, Birmingham's slim chances of securing a top-six finish could be derailed if they are not able to call upon his services for their upcoming clashes with Sheffield Wednesday and Millwall.
