Reading FC are very much in a transitional phase at the moment after the arrival of former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam as manager in the summer, the Dutchman is clearly trying to implement a new footballing philosophy and as with all change, it takes time.

Reading have had a good start to the season and currently find themselves lying in 8th place in the Sky Bet Championship table after picking up 4 wins from the opening 8 games, and are equal on points with Brentford who currently occupy the last play-off spot.

With the emergency loan window being abolished this season, there is a greater emphasis being placed on the free agent market, and despite the season being 8 games in there is still some very talented players who are currently unattached.

One player currently unattached is Peter Odemwingie and this article is going to take a look at THREE reasons why the Royals should snap him up...

Bolster strike force

Reading are arguably light in the strikers department this season, and with the emergency loan window being abolished this season they are either going to have to wait until January or dip into the free agent market.

Former Stoke City and West Brom man Peter Odemwingie would be a perfect fit with the Royals and would give them a quality option upfront.

At the moment Reading only have Yann Kermorgant, Joseph Mendes and young Dominic Samuel to call upon and might find the addition of a proven experience forward such as Peter Odemwingie a welcome one.

As well as being able to play as a striker, Odemwingie is also a versatile option as he can play on either flank as well as in behind the main striker in a number 10 role.

Top Flight experience

Peter Odemwingie

At the age of 35, he would add masses and masses of experience into the ranks at the Madejski Stadium and would be not only be a great influence on the pitch, he would be a great influence off it and would be able to help nurture and develop some of the younger lads around the club.

For the past six years the 35-year-old frontman has been playing the majority of his football in the English Premier League with the likes of Cardiff City, West Brom and Stoke City and has proven repeatedly that he has what it takes to score goals at the highest level.

His most prolific season in the top flight came back in the 2010-2011 campaign when playing for The Baggies, he made a total of 32 league appearances for the club and netted 15 goals in the process.

Approaching his final years in the game

While many would look at his age as a negative, I like to flip that opinion on it's head and look at it as a positive.

Firstly, at the age of 35 the former Nigeria international is coming towards the end of his career and will be desperate to just play football while his body still allows him too and due to the season already starting and him not being at a club, I would hazard a guess that the frontman would be willing to considerably lower his wages to be able to just get playing again.

Also, Odemwingie will be desperate for that last prolific season or that one last promotion campaign and will be working harder than ever to ensure he gets that one last taste of glory before hanging up his boots for good.
