After making their first signing of the summer on Thursday night, Reading will hoping that's the catalyst for more players to follow goalkeeper Joao Virginia through the door in Berkshire.

The club are currently on their pre-season tour and are set to face Sevilla with a very inexperienced squad. Potential late summer arrivals, combined with this inexperience, is currently giving Jose Gomes a team selection dilemma ahead of the first league game.

Their first Championship game is against Sheffield Wednesday at the Madejski Stadium, on Saturday 3rd August.

The Owls have their own problems at this moment in time. Their current manager, Steve Bruce, is set to take over as the manager of Premier League side Newcastle United.

This will cause the Sheffield side problems, who are currently in the middle of their pre-season preparations. This first fixture at the start of August could end up being a tussle between two sides who will be at the lower end of the Championship.

Apart from a lack of signings, Reading haven't had any disruptions to their season preparations as of yet. This pre-season tour, as well as friendlies against Peterborough United and Chelsea, will give Gomes an opportunity to shape his squad ahead of the new season.

Here are 3 potential lineups Reading could play against Sheffield Wednesday on the opening weekend of the season.

New signings galore

Reading currently have a reasonably decent squad spine. Andy Yiadom, Liam Moore, the returning Jordan Obita, Andy Rinomhota, Modou Barrow, Yakou Meite and Andrija Novakovich are all likely to form an integral part of the Reading squad.

Goalkeeper Joao Virginia signed on loan last night for the remainder of the 2019/20 season. However, there's still a lot of work for Reading to do in preparation for the 2019/20 season.

Reading are in need of adding centre back and a defensive midfielder to partner Andy Rinomhota. On top of this, a striker, another central midfielder and an attacking midfielder could be useful to the Royals, who could go for a more experienced look.

Potential lineup: Virginia, Obita, Moore, NEW SIGNING, Yiadom, Rinomhota, NEW SIGNING, Barrow, Swift, Meite, Novakovich

Play the youth

It's proving difficult for Reading to shift their transfer-listed players at the moment. Whilst Reading released several players at the end of last season, the club have only managed to sell Lewis Ward and Liam Kelly, both for low fees.

This isn't ideal for Financial Fair Play and the Royals may not get the 'green light' from the EFL to make any further signings unless the club clear even more wages off the books to address their high wage: income ratio.

This could force Gomes to put even more faith in his youth players. The manager has already taken numerous academy players to the pre-season camp in Spain to see if they're up to the task of stepping up to the first team.

Potential lineup: Virginia, Obita, Moore, McIntyre, Yiadom, Rinomhota, Holsgrove, Olise, Barrett, Meite, Loader

A traditional 4-4-2 with Baldock up top

Although Gomes is unlikely to play 4-4-2, it gives him the opportunity to chase a game if the Royals are in that game situation.

Striker Sam Baldock is still at the club, after refusing to take a pay-cut to leave the Madejski Stadium. The club have taken the decision to take him on the pre-season tour in Spain and could give the 30-year-old a fresh start at Reading.

Baldock is best-suited in a 4-4-2 formation with a target man to bounce off of. Even though he hasn't found his best form at Reading, he played an important part in Brighton's promotion-winning 2016/17 season. He could really excel with Andrija Novakovich partnering him.

Potential lineup: Virginia, Obita, Moore, NEW SIGNING, Yiadom, Barrow, Rinomhota, NEW SIGNING, Meite, Baldock, Novakovich
