Portsmouth have been in the mire for a while now since the financial collapse that ripped the club apart a few years back, but things seem to finally be looking up at Fratton Park.

The club is now owned by the fans, attendances are up, the players are performing on the pitch, and their long awaited promotion from Sky Bet League Two seems on the cards now. They currently sit in seventh and are six points off the automatic positions after enduring a difficult run of results recently.

Manager Paul Cook will be hoping it is just a blip as Portsmouth look to prepare for the final run in where inconsistency will be very costly.

They seem to have a good mix of youth and experience in there starting eleven, and their star player this season has been teenage starlet Conor Chaplin, who is their leading goalscorer, and was tipped by his manager as the next Jamie Vardy.

Also crucial to Portsmouth's good run this season are fellow strikers Matt Tubbs and Adam McGurk who have both proven prolific at this level.

The fans are singing his praises and no wonder, the midfield dynamo is Pompey's top scorer this season which is why he must be wondering why he's on the bench.

Portsmouth fans have linked the recent run of form to the fact that Cook is benching Chaplin.

He is known for his excellent pace and his dead ball skills, while he has also been working on his finishing.

Possibly the finest youth prospect in League Two, he must be reintroduced into Pompey's first team and fast if they want an automatic berth.

Marc McNulty

The midfield of Portsmouth this season has been crucial to their success, dominating other teams in the middle of the park gives the strikers more space to run into and more freedom.

But players like McNulty also score a host of goals from midfield, and the 23-year-old has bagged six goals since he was loaned out by Sheffield United.

Possessing an impressive work rate and impeccable vision, he has possibly been Portsmouth's most important midfielder this season, and his presence will be crucial for the run in.

Gareth Evans

The 27-year-old midfielder has delivered a consistent string of performances down the wing for Portsmouth this season, and has seven goals so far this season with numerous assists.

His form has tailed off recently so he will need to improve for the run in, but his good work often went unnoticed in the early part of the season when Pompey were doing very well.
