Wales captain Ashley Williams could be on the verge of signing with Bristol City.

The defender was released by Everton earlier in the summer and has struggled to find a club since. However, after being caught on camera in a Bristol City tracksuit and speaking to his likely new boss, Lee Johnson, he looks set to join the south-west side.

Williams spent last year on loan to Stoke City, but failed to make an impression during an season when the whole team was poor.

In the case of Williams moving to Bristol, there are effects on the team which should be considered.

Experience and leadership

241 appearances in the Premier League, 171 Championship appearances and 86 caps for his country. It is undeniable Williams has the experience to benefit any team. This could prove to be a huge asset for a team looking to fight for a position in the top six.

With this, he has the commanding attributes to organise and lead Bristol City's defence from the first moment. While he won't be captain, he already has the leadership qualities to improve help the team on and off the pitch.

Additional depth

While Tomas Kalas may have replaced Adam Webster, adding Ashley Williams to a team which plays three centre-backs in their defensive line will be no short of crucial. Also, the Robins only have four established centre-backs to do this, however, and supplying quality in depth will be important.

Johnson though should be aware of Williams weakness when he is dragged out-wide. He can be 'exposed' from the flanks putting him either side of the middle centre-back could cause unneeded defensive issues.

With Williams at the heart of the defence, he could play a leading role in solidifying Bristol's defence and improving their clean sheet record (which stands at one clean sheet in five games in all competitions).

A physical force from crosses and set pieces

David Pentrice, from the Liverpool Echo, noted that one of his best attributes was being an aerial presence. Having an aerial threat to clear away crosses, and to pose a threat at the opposite end, will be just as effective as his leadership and where he plays in the defence.

In addition, his overall physicality as a player will prove to be a useful asset in tackles, harassing attackers and beating players to the ball. Ultimately, by Bristol City signing Ashley Williams, it could affect the whole course of this season's promotion race.
