It's an exciting end to the season for Cardiff City.

The Welsh side sit seventh in the Championship, just four points behind Wednesday who occupy that final play-off spot and on Saturday they will be able to bridge the gap to just one point, as they take on the South Yorkshire side in a crucial clash.

Cardiff have had a positive season and even if they fail to reach the play-offs, there is a lot of time for Russell Slade to tinker his side and come back stronger next season.

The signing of Lex Immers in January was one of the best signings made by a club in that window.

The 29-year-old signed from Feyenoord on loan and one of his greatest assets is his eye for goal from midfield.

After scoring 31 goals for Feyenoord he has already scored five for Cardiff and he is a man who they will definitely attempt to keep hold of in the summer.

Alongside Immers, Bruno Ecuele Manga and Joe Ralls have also impressed in defence and ultimately the one place Cardiff must improve in is the striking department.

It is the one area that has been frustrating the fans this season and Slade must attempt to find a striker that fits into his system next season.

With that in mind, here are THREE players who have let down Cardiff City this season......

Sammy Ameobi

ameobiiii

23-year-old Sammy Ameobi has failed to use his time on loan at Cardiff to impress his new boss Rafa Benitez.

As the season comes to an end, he has only scored once and bagged three assists in 35 appearances.

Understandably 27 of these were from the bench, but this only shows that Ameobi has failed to make it into the first team at Cardiff.

The last time he played 90 minutes was against Charlton where he was sent off and he has really failed to make a big impact for a club that are chasing the play-offs.

It is starting to look like Ameobi is failing to live up to his potential, he is now 23 and has thus far failed to make the grade in the Championship. It will be interesting to see where Ameobi ends up next.

Joe Mason

Although not at Cardiff anymore, in 21 starting appearances for the Welsh side this season, Joe Mason has only scored 6 goals.

The highly rated striker has unfortunately failed to get into scoring form anywhere he has been and after joining Wolves in the January window, it just seems like he has disappointed Cardiff fans.

Some strikers don't live off of goals and spend time being a nuisance for the opposition defence and helping the players around them get into good areas, but for many of his 21 games for Cardiff this season he failed to lead the line well.

His five year stay at the Welsh side failed to blossom into anything huge and it was disappointing to see Mason leave after failing to live up to his potential.

Tom Lawrence

Tom Lawrence

Lawrence, much like Mason, is a forward who just can't get into any sort of form at the moment.

The former Manchester United man is on loan at Cardiff from title-chasing Leicester City, and having been at Blackburn up until Christmas he joined Cardiff in a bid to improve their play-off challenge.

The Wrexham born man has failed to score a goal for Cardiff in 13 appearances and only scored two in 14 starting appearances for Blackburn.

It has been a season to forget for the 22 year-old but luckily for him there is plenty of time ahead to improve.

Cardiff fans, do you agree that these three have underperformed this season? Who should you sign in the summer? Let us know in the comments below!
