Expectations at Portsmouth are high and the unequivocal aim for this season is promotion from Sky Bet League Two.

Manager Paul Cook knows this is required of him after he fell short last year following a play-off semi-final defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

He has been shaping his squad up nicely, and Pompey have put some good performances in so far this season. Inconsistency and unpredictability ultimately cost them an automatic spot last year though, and early signs are suggesting that it may be a similar story this year.

While they look defensively solid most of the time, they do suffer from lapses in concentration. While they are considered an extremely dangerous attacking side, sometimes the front men just don't fire.

Pompey are currently sitting in fourth but will hope to improve on that with a winning streak.

This requires goal-scorers, though, and that is perhaps something they lack a bit. Gary Roberts and Carl Baker have six and four from midfield respectively, while strikers Curtis Main, Michael Smith and Conor Chaplin are rotated but none have stamped down a permanent place with plenty of goals.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Jay Williams identifies TWO alternative striker options they could consider bringing in this January...

Oliver Hawkins

Derby County v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Sky Bet Football League Championship

Looking at the success of Jamie Vardy, Dwight Gayle, Andre Gray and others, who have risen meteorically from non-league to the top two divisions, it might be worth looking for the next one of these.

Oliver Hawkins has only ever played non-league football (other than a few appearances in League Two last year) but he has already hit 10 goals for Dagenham and Redbridge in the National League so far this season.

The 24-year-old is a tall striker with an eye for goal, and would be a welcome addition to the Pompey ranks.

Jay Simpson

There are rumours that Jay Simpson is not quite settled at Leyton Orient after he was left out the opening several games this season.

The prolific 27-year-old netted 25 times in League Two last year, and Portsmouth need someone with the know-how of scoring at this level.

After a move to Southend United failed to transpire this summer, he might be tempted to jump off the sinking Leyton Orient ship in January instead, with Portsmouth a very favourable destination for any player at that level.
