Sheffield Wednesday are close to completing the signing of Barnsley striker Sam Winnall.

The former Scunthorpe man has made 95 appearances for the Tykes, netting 40 times, however looks set to switch allegiance from the Red side of Yorkshire to Hillsborough.

Carlos Carvalhal has been quiet thus far in this transfer window, however will definitely look to pursue new, fresh talent as they look to build on their current 6th position in the Championship table.

The 25-year old looks to be the Portuguese boss' primary target, and a deal worth around £500,000 looks to be on the cards.

The Hillsborough faithful have divided opinions of whether they want the Owls to land Winnall or not.

With that being said, here FLW writer George Harbey identifies TWO pros and TWO cons of Sheffield Wednesday signing Sam Winnall...

PRO 1 - He is in prolific form

After spearheading Scunthorpe United to automatic promotion from League Two in the 13/14 campaign with 23 league goals, Winnall has not disappointed the Oakwell faithful when it comes to finding the back of the net.

Following his move from the Iron, Winnall managed net 24 times in all competitions last term, in the Tykes' remarkable promotion winning campaign via the playoffs.

And after netting 11 times in the league already this term, in what is his first season in the Championship, he is showing no signs of his prolific form coming to an end...

CON 1 - His wages are quite excessive

In a recent report from the Sun, the paper claims that Carvalhal is offering Winnall QUADRUPLE of what he is earning at Oakwell.

This means that the forward will be pocketing around £18,000 a week, rather than his usual £4,500 a week that he is earning at Barnsley.

If Wednesday want to remain active in the window to keep up with their fellow promotion rivals, they cannot afford to increase wages too much, otherwise not many other players will be coming through the entrance at Hillsborough...

PRO 2 - He can adapt to Wednesday's style of play easily

Although Winnall is seen as more of a "get in behind" type of player, his versatility makes him a complete forward, and more importantly a potentially brilliant asset for Carvalhal's men.

He can operate as a target man, and often tends to drop deep in order to link up with midfield and turn a provider in himself.

The likes of Fernando Forestieri and Gary Hooper are more agile, paced forwards, whereas Steven Fletcher brings a more physical presence to the Owls' frontline, however Winnall brings the complete package.

CON 2 - Where does this leave Wednesday's other forwards?

Bringing in Winnall would undoubtedly be a shrewd addition for Carlos Carvalhal, however where does this leave the Owls' other forwards?

Fernando Forestieri has recently signed a new deal at the club, therefore his future at Hillsborough looks to be safe for years to come.

But Gary Hooper and Steven Fletcher are both clearly too good to be left out of the starting 11, should the deal for Winnall materialise; Carvalhal needs to play this move wisely...
