Having taken over the reins at Hull City earlier last Saturday, Grant McCann will undoubtedly be looking to put his own stamp on his new side ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign.

Therefore, it is not at all surprising that the 39-year-old has been linked with a move for one of the most talented players in the lower leagues of English football.

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, Barry Fry, who is the Director of Football at Peterborough United, confirmed that the Tigers have made an inquiry about Marcus Maddison, revealing: "Hull have been in touch, it wasn't Grant as he doesn't deal with transfers.

"They asked how much we would want for him and I said they would have the buyout clause in his contract [£2.5m].

"If they do that we couldn't stop him leaving if he wanted to go."

Before launching a bid, it is imperative that Hull consider both the positives and the negatives that the winger could have on their fortunes next season.

Keeping this in mind, we have set out two pros as well as two cons to the Tigers sealing a deal for Maddison based on his career to date.

Check them out below...

Pros

He was magnificent for Peterborough last season

Unquestionably one of Peterborough's star performers during the previous campaign alongside Ivan Toney and Joe Ward, Maddison's outstanding levels of consistency resulted in him rightfully being named as the club's Player of the Season in May.

An incredibly gifted player, the 25-year-old recorded a remarkable total of 23 goal contributions in all competitions for Posh and looks to have all the ingredients needed to thrive at a higher level than League One.

If he can replicate this kind of form for Hull next season, there is no reason why the Yorkshire-based outfit cannot achieve a tremendous amount of success in the Championship.

He could thrive once again under the guidance of McCann

Having thrived under the guidance of McCann during the manager's time in charge of Peterborough, Maddison may be attracted by the prospect of re-uniting with the Hull boss this summer.

Considering the fact that McCann has helped nurture the talents of Mallik Wilks, John Marquis and Herbie Kane over the past 12 months, he will be extremely confident of getting the very best out of the midfielder if he does decide to move to the KCOM Stadium.

Cons

He has never played at Championship level before

Although Maddison has terrorised League One defences over the past five years for Peterborough, the fact that he has never played at Championship level before may be a concern for Hull.

Famed for its competitiveness, the second-tier can be a very unforgiving place at times for those who cannot adapt and therefore the Posh winger will have to hit the ground running or face being cut adrift by McCann.

There are no guarantees that he will be an upgrade on their existing wide options

When you consider that Hull already have the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki at their disposal, it could be argued that Maddison would not necessarily be an upgrade on either player.

Therefore, unless the midfielder is happy to play a cameo role for the Tigers next season, it may worth McCann spending his money on an individual who he knows is going to bring something special to his squad.
