Owen Coyle's Blackburn Rovers currently find themselves occupying the last relegation spot but sit just one point from safety.

The club have taken just 6 wins all season and look destined to be scrapping in a relegation dogfight for the rest of the season.

Survival is no doubt the aim for this club and it appears that January could prove to be a pivotal month as the right additions could see them catapult up the table.

But Rovers will need to be shrewd in January as they look to build on their impressive 1-0 victory over promotion chasing Newcastle United.

Blackburn fans will know that a long season is in store but with the right arrivals, they should be able to consolidate their place in the second tier, avoid the drop and look to build next year.

Midfield is one department they could look at strengthening.

This article is going to take a look at two midfielders that Coyle could potentially look to bring in this month...

Joe Newell

One player that Blackburn could look to secure this month is Rotherham United's midfield playmaker Joe Newell.

The Millers look destined for League One, meaning some of their better players may be looking for ways to escape the club for their own personal gain and someone who will no doubt be looking to stay in The Championship is Joe Newell.

Newell is arguably one of The Millers' most influential players and could prove to be a very shrewd addition by Owen Coyle should he secure his signature.

The former Peterborough United man is comfortable playing anywhere on the left flank and is also just as accomplished in a central midfield role.

Marcus Maddison

Peterborough's attacking midfield star Marcus Maddison is another player that Blackburn should be taking a closer look at this month.

Since signing for the Posh back in 2014, he has excelled in League One, scoring over 20 times for the club in just over 80 appearances and assisting many goals too.

AdTech Ad AdTech Ad Maddison is a versatile player who can be deployed on either flank, as well as in a number 10 role, and also as a striker if necessary.

The 23-year-old appears to have every technical and physical attribute required to make the step up to the second tier, and is just waiting for the right club to take a chance on him.
