Charlton Athletic could well be set to strengthen their backline this month, with Richard Cawley of the South London Press reporting that Guinean centre back Florentin Pogba is currently training with the clubs under 23 side.

Pogba, the brother of Manchester United star Paul, is currently without a club after leaving Major League Soccer side Atlanta United, thus allowing the 29-year-old to move freely among clubs as a free agent.

The Guinean possesses a wealth of experience, having turned out for the likes of AS Saint-Étienne in France and Genclerbirligi Ankara in Turkey, thus making him a sound addition for a club of Charlton's stature.

Lee Bowyer is very much still in the midst of scouring the market to strengthen his side in several areas and perhaps the 29-year-old could well provide the answer to one of his many selection problems at present.

Here, we take a look at ONE winner and ONE loser of Charlton securing a deal for Florentin Pogba this month...

Winner

Tom Lockyer

The summer signing from Bristol Rovers would certainly benefit from the presence of Pogba as it would allow Bowyer to rotate his backline on more occasions than he has been able to previously.

Lockyer has played more games than any of the club's existing defenders, meaning that a spell out of the spotlight could do the 25-year-old the world of good as it would reduce the possibility of burnout.

The centre back has been ever-present for the Addicks since arriving at the club and Bowyer will be conscious about managing the defender's minutes as we head into what is a congested round of fixtures in the Championship.

Pogba will also offer another experienced option at centre half that will no doubt help to take Lockyer's game to a whole new level after making what has been an already bright start to life in the capital.

Loser

Naby Sarr

The towering Senegalese defender has had something of a mixed campaign so far, with the 26-year-old having put in a series of error-strewn performances for the Addicks so far, causing his suitability for the role of regular starter to be called into question.

Pogba's arrival could well see the number 23 slip even further down the pecking order at the Valley, with the ex-Atlanta man representing a more solid, experienced option on paper.

Sarr will be keen to up his game over the coming months of the season in order to stake his claim to be starting alongside the likes of Lockyer after what has been a testing period for the centre back.

If performances do not improve for the big defender, he could well be the victim of an end of season cull for the Addicks as they seek to reshape their squad following the takeover by East Street Investments.
