Reading FC recently completed the signing of Charlie Adam, following the midfielder's release from Stoke City earlier this year.

The Scotsman penned a one-year-deal with the Royals, and will add valuable experience to the Reading squad ahead of the new Championship season.

In today's FLW Spotlight, we look into Adams' statistics from last season in more detail.

Adam struggled for regular game time for much of last year's league campaign with Stoke, so it will come as no surprise that his statistics don't make for the best of reading.

The experienced midfielder made 12 appearances in total, which totalled to 434 minutes of action for the Potters, as they struggled in their first season back in the Championship.

Adam was an excellent servant to the club, but he will have known that his days were numbered after rarely featuring for the first-team last term.

He failed to score once in his limited game time, and attempted 12 shots in total, which is a statistic he'll be hoping to improve next season with Reading as they look to improve on a poor league campaign last season.

It remains to be seen as to where he will fit into this Reading team, but he could line up in the midfield alongside John Swift and Andy Rinomhota.

If that is to be the case, then Adam will surely be expected to play the deeper role in the midfield, to allow Rinomhota and Swift to push further up the field to provide support to the strikers going forward.

He won 48.6% of his aerial duels, and given that the other midfielders in the Reading team aren't known for their aerial presence, it's an attribute that will certainly be of use to them in the future.

Jose Gomes has introduced a possession-based style of football at the Madejski Stadium, Adam will be hoping that he can adjust to that style of play, which definitely isn't similar to what was being played at Stoke.

Adam attempted 202 passes in total for the Potters last season, and with a pass success rate of 61.4%, it shows that he has some work to do in that department.

The signing of Adam seems to have divided opinion amongst the Reading supporters, with many of them claiming that the money spent on his wages would have been better spent elsewhere.

But the former Liverpool and Stoke midfielder will add some much-needed experience to a relatively young Reading squad, who will be eager to prove themselves in the Championship next season.

He could be in line to make his competitive debut for the Royals when they host Sheffield Wednesday at the Madejski Stadium on the opening day of the season.
